Add Your Voice in Southeast Asian Equal Pay Day Twitter Storm, September 12th
Updated On: Sep 17, 2018
On Wednesday, September 12th, CLUW is adding our voice against the often overlooked wage disparity that Southeast Asian women face. Southeast Asian women make only 61 cents to the white man’s dollar but their struggle is rarely recognized in conversations about equal pay because of the “model minority” myth.
The “model minority” myth creates the narrative that all Asian Americans are wealthy and successful but the truth is that Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander women actually experience some of the widest pay gaps. The mainstream narrative claiming that Asian American women make more on average than other racial/ethnic groups in the United States obscures the reality that different Asian ethnic groups have widely different experiences. Asian American and Pacific Islander communities deserve equal pay for equal work and need research, advocacy, and policies that acknowledge the diversity of needs that exist across AAPI communities.
We need your support and participation in the Southeast Asian Equal Pay Day Twitterstorm happening September 12 from 2-3pm ET. Here are some sample tweets:
Southeast Asian women in the U.S. are paid, on average, only 61 cents for every dollar a white man makes. That means they lose approximately $660,000 over a lifetime! We have to do better than this. #SEAEqualPay #AAPIEqualPay
The #ModelMinorityMyth is good at one thing: obscuring the real data and lumping together the diverse experiences of #AAPI women. For example, did you know that Laotian women in the U.S. are paid only 60 cents for every dollar a white man makes? #SEAEqualPay #AAPIEqualPay
Southeast Asian American women face some of the highest pay disparities among women of color. For example, Hmong women in the U.S. are paid only 59 cents for every white male dollar -- yet these statistics often go overlooked. #SEAEqualPay #AAPIEqualPay
