What older women
can do to prevent
cervical cancer

The National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO), to which CLUW is affiliated, has a Women's Health Task Force that is working with CLUW to increase women's awareness of cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) -- the virus that causes this deadly disease.

In honor of Older Americans Month this month (May), the task force has developed materials on older women and cervical cancer prevention (see box at right).

Our goal with this effort is two-fold:

  1. Spread the work that despite the recent attention given to the HPV vaccine for girls and young women, older women need to understand their cervical cancer risk and prevention options
  2. Secure Medicare coverage for HPV testing as part of routine cervical cancer screening.

Please pass these materials on to your friends and family, as well as any communication sources that can help spread the word.
