Leadership
the Eleanor Roosevelt Way
by Robin Gerber
Leadership
the Eleanor Roosevelt Way, written by Robin Gerber (a
CLUW member and former carpenters' union legislative director),
chronicles Roosevelt's remarkable ability to confront and
overcome hurdles which lead her to be called the "First
Lady of the World." Realizing the critical need for women
to have an easily-accessible resource to take leadership roles,
Gerber draws on the values, tactics and beliefs that enabled
Eleanor Roosevelt to bring about transformational changes
in herself and the world.
The
format of the book is easy-to-read: Each chapter begins with
an introductory story taken from successive periods in Eleanor's
life, followed by the lessons she learned and how they contributed
to her growth as a person and a leader. Gerber also provides
anecdotes from Eleanor's life as well as the lives of contemporary
"everyday" women to show how all women can discover
and further develop their leadership skills.
Gerber,
who currently is a Senior Scholar at the Academy of Leadership
at the University of Maryland, wrote the book when she realized
that although there were many popular books on leadership
using male role models, the only one focusing on a woman was
one about Elizabeth the Great.
There
is a Book Group Guide
for the book and Gerber has added a number of questions specifically
for union women.
"I
encourage all union women to read this book," says CLUW
President Gloria Johnson. "I especially urge CLUW chapters
and groups of local union women to form book groups and use
the book as an opportunity to focus on leadership development.
"Eleanor
Roosevelt, driven by passion and. her optimism and personal
responsibility provided an underpinning to her success, is
a fabulous role model for all of us."
