CLUW LETTER
Dear Sisters and Brothers:
A
number of concerned union women and I am organizing a local
chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, (CLUW) in the
area.
CLUW
is a nonpartisan organization within the union movement. Formed
in 1974, CLUW has more than 75 chapters and a membership of
20,000 women and men across the country and is endorsed by
many national unions.
The
primary aim of this National Coalition is to unify all union
women in a viable organization to determine our common problems
and concerns and to develop action programs within the framework
of our unions to deal effectively with our objectives.
The
basic goals of CLUW are to promote affirmative action in the
workplace, strengthen the role of women in their unions, organize
the unorganized women and increase involvement of women in
the political and legislative process.
CLUW
local chapters educate members, keep them up-to-date and provide
a support network for women in unions.
We
would appreciate your help in sharing this information as
well as extending an invitation to your membership to participate
in organizing a local chapter in the area.
Thank
you for your cooperation in helping to create the _______________________
chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women.

AFTER
RECRUITMENT,
WHAT THEN?
Set
a meeting date and select a time and place convenient for
members to attend. It is
important to consider:
Many
members have young children
Many
members attend school
Many
members are working on other activities
- Explain
what CLUW is and answer questions
- Discuss
important local situations and issues that are affecting
many union women and that CLUW can work on
- Sign
up members at the first meeting
- Display
CLUW literature, posters and related materials at the meeting
- Invite
CLUW NEB members, officers or your CLUW Vice President to
attend and speak to your group
- Provide
a sign-in sheet at the meeting
- Let
every member introduce herself/himself, union, position
in the union and why she or he is attending the meeting
and what issues she or he would like to work on
- Develop
and distribute a questionnaire to find out more about the
member, her union and her interests in CLUW
