Over the weekend, Beatrice “Bea” Lumpkin passed away at the age of 107. Bea was a giant of our movement. She began her long, inspiring career in the fight for workers’ rights when she started working in a factory at age 14.
A committed and principled organizer and activist, she stood with working people everywhere in the fight for labor rights, civil rights and education rights. Her work touched so many of our unions, constituency groups and allied organizations, including the Chicago Teachers Union and AFT, the United Steelworkers (USW) and the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW).
She truly embodied solidarity—and we’ll use her inspiration to keep fighting for a more just world for all. Rest in power, Bea.
